Frederick Douglass
I would unite with anybody to do right and with nobody to do wrong.
If there is no struggle, there is no progress.
The white man's happiness cannot be purchased by the black man's misery.
Background
Douglass attended abolishment meetings and was a strong supporter of the abolishment of slavery. He used his social, orator, and writer skills to support the anti-slavery movement. Douglass' writting and speeches talked about his life as a slave and gave reasons as to why slavery should be abolished. In 1843, Douglass participated in the American Anti-Slavery Society project to help spread the anti-slavery movement. Douglass was also a strong supported of equality of all people, wheather black, female, Native American or recent immigrant.
Douglass was born a slave in Talbot County, Maryland. His exact birthdate is unknown but he celebrated his birthday each Febuary 14. Douglass was separated from his mother at a young age, and was moved to live with different slave holders. At age 12, his owner's wife named Sophia, taught him the alphabet, but latter stopped because her husband prohibited her from teaching Douglass.
