HINDUISM
This picture represents the caste system that people were born into. The highest cast, Brahmans at the top and the Sudras at the bottom.
Hinduism is India's main religion. It does not have a specific founder, but it started based off of Aryan beliefs and practices. The Hindu beliefs are recorded in many sacred texts, but the two most important are the Vedas and the Upanishads. The Vedas contain eternal truths that were only revealed to the wise men. The Upanishads were created to help explain what was in the Vedas. Not only are Hindu ideas kept in sacred texts, but they are also involved in law codes, epics, or poems. Two of the most famous epics are the 'Ramayana' and the 'Mahabharata'. The caste system created strict social and religious order. When a person was born, they were automatically placed into a certain caste. Many rules had to be follwed, such as marrying only within your own caste. People that were in the highest caste were seen as the closest to acheiving moksha. Each caste, high or low accepted that their deeds in past lives reflected upon their present position in society.
This is the Hindu god Siva, also known as the destroyer. Brahma is the creator, and Vishnu is the preserver.
Although Hindus worship thousands of gods, they concentrate on three. Brahman, Vishnu, and Siva. A few other beliefs lie in: *brahman- supreme force or reality of the universe *sects- religious groups *atman- having a universal soul *moksha- freeing the soul from the body, so the soul can unite with brahman *reincarnation- the rebirth of the soul in various forms *karma- every action either mentally or physically affects a persons future life *dharma- duties or obligations
Aum or Om
The Aum symbolizes the Absolute or Ultimate reality. This is when everyone and everything is beyond individualization.
