Deforestation is the clearance of forests by logging and/or burning (popularly known as slash and burn).
Selection cutting is used to maintain uneven-aged stands (where the trees are all different ages). The forest regenerates naturally, with the young trees and seedlings benefiting from the protection of existing trees.
Deforestation is a contributor to global warming, and is often cited as one of the major causes of the enhanced greenhouse effect. Tropical deforestation is responsible for approximately 20% of world greenhouse gas emissions.
