Obeah goes by many names in the Caribbean; for instance: Shango; Santeria; Voodoo; or Ju-Ju. The term Obeah is most commonly used in Jamaica and Barbados, and is a derivative of the African 'Obeye', which according to beliefs is described as an entity that lives within witches (Religion and Resistance).

These West African religions use magic to help their practioners and harm those opposed to the practioners. They focus on deities or spirits of the dead in a similar way that Roman Catholics pray to Christian saints ("Afro-American religions").
The cotton tree is said to house duppies, or evil spirits that haunt the living, in their roots. Obeah men use the cotton tree in order to cast malevolent spells.that displace a persons soul and trap it inside the tree ("Jamaica Folklore | Cotton Tree").
