Fred devoted his life to saving the eyesight of thousands of people.
“I don't know if you can see that lens sitting on my right knee...that costs at least 140 dollars Australian. Hopefully, in Africa,it will be able to be produced for in the order of a few dollars.“
Fred Hollows, pioneered the idea of cataract surgery in developing countries so that he could help not only the fortunate, but the less fortunate as well.
Born in Dublin, New Zealand, fred then became a doctor and began to specialize in the treatment of diseases of the eye. He had to travel to England to do this and won a prize as one of the top students.
Fred Hollows was named Australian of the year, in 1990, because of his ground-breaking work.
