Adventures in Odyssey Suspicious Minds

Characters; All of which are Christians! W ~ Mr. Whittiker/Whit; a nice older man that runs the local Ice Cream shop. C ~ Connie Kendal; a spunky, happy-go-lucky teenager who needs to learn to hold her tounge once in awhile! E ~ Eugene Melstner; A computer expert who has such a large vocabulary that no one can understand him! (Sorry if I spelled his name wrong!) B ~ Bernard Walten; Whit's End's full-time window washer and part-time story teller. S ~ Stranger; I don't know, he's a stranger!

C ~ Whit I'm gonna wash these trays off. W ~ Ok Connie! and 25 cents is your change. (said to the stranger) S ~ Thanks Whit. E ~ Mr. Whittiker W ~ Yes Eugene? E ~ Well, I was wondering if it would inconvinience you if I were to utallize the computer in your office for a short time while I'm on my break? C ~ Oh brother, why don't you speak English? W ~ (laughs) You can use my computer if you need to Eugene. E ~ Thank you. Normally I would use one of the computers at the collage, but lately they're all taken by the time I get there. W ~ Oh, that's all right you're welcome to it. E ~ I have hopes of buying a computer of my own so I won't have to impose upon you any longer. You know, I 've been saving for quite some time and now I'm only one hundred dollars short of the money I need. C ~ Pfft, You're gonna spend a hundred bucks on a dumb computer? Good grief! E ~ Computers are not dumb Ms. Kendal, and it's more than a hundred, you obviously haven't grasped the need for computers in our day and time. C ~ Nobody neeeeds a computer Eugene, there are a lot more important things you can get. E ~ Oh really? Uh, Such as? C ~ Such as a car, if I had to spend a lot of money on something I'd but a car. E ~ huh huh huh huh, a car. W ~ Are you thinking of buying a car Connie? C ~ Well, now that I have my drivers lisence, yes. Mom and I have been talking about it and if I can save up another hundred dollars, I'm gonna buy a BRAND NEW 1967 Ford. E ~ A brand new 1967 Ford. By the contradictions and turms, and you scoff at me! C ~ What's wrong with buying a car? It looks better on the road than a computer! E ~ I don't ride my computer Ms. Kendal, I ride a bike! They're safe, economical, and healthy. C ~ Oh, Right, and you come in all sweaty, give me an air conditioned car anyday. E ~ (sigh) Mr. Whittiker what can I do, it's like casting the perverbial, "Pearls Before Swine." W ~ Oh no no no you don't, you're not dragging me into this! I'm going up to my office. C ~ What did you call me? E ~ Huh? I didn't call you anything! C ~ You called me a swine, didn't you? E ~ (sigh) Ms. Kendal, we have work to do. C ~ You can't just call me names and walk away! COME BACK HERE! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ W ~ and 67, 68, and 69. Humm. C ~ Tables and dishes are ready for tommorrow Whit. W ~ Oh, thanks Connie. Humm, this doesn't make sence. C ~ What's wrong? W ~ Well, the totals don't match up. C ~ What-do-ya mean? W ~ Well todays recipts tell me I should have $186 and 69 cents, but I only have $126 and 69 cents. C ~ You're missing $60? W ~ Yah, uh, better count it again, I guess. C ~ Well, I'll look around. Maybe it fell on the floor! E ~ Everything's turned off upstairs! C ~ We're missing $60 dollars from the cash register Eugene! W ~ Now now now Connie. E ~ Are you positive Mr. Whitiker? W ~ Well, I'm double-checking now. C ~ I don't see anything back here - Oh wait I found it! Oh, a wadded napkin. E ~ Hum, green? C ~ Left over from Christmas. Well, if it wasn't dropped, what could have happened to it? I mean, you don't think someone stole the money, do you Whit? W ~ No, of course not. E ~ And besides, who could possibly steal it? There are only 3 people with the key to the register. Mr. Whittiker, myself and you. Unless of course, someone forgot to lock the register when it wasn't attended. C ~ Well, what if someone took it out of the register while we weren't looking? W ~ Couldn't do that without the key, Connie. $126 and 69 cents. We're stiiill short $60 dollars! C ~ (sigh) This is creepy, who would do such a thing? W ~ We don't know that anyone did, Connie! E ~ I'm very conciencious about locking the register and keeping the keys on my person. C ~ It wasn't me! I make sure to lock up too... W ~ Oh, the money will turn up. Maybe the register recives the printing wrong. I'll check it in the morning. Don't be so suspicious! E ~ I don't think it's unreasonable to be suspitious in this day and age Mr. Whittiker. W ~ Well, unreasonable or not, the fact is we KNOW most of the folks who come in here! I-I can't imagine any of them would take our money, any more than I would believe either of you would do it! It'll turn up! Don't worry about it. E ~ Yeees, but uh, any of us are capable of stealing don't you think? W ~ True, but that doesn't mean we will steal! These are our friends you're talking about Eugene! I'm sure there's a simple explanation for all of this. We'll find the money. E ~However, just to play the slueth for a moment, since it is obvious that WE didn't take the money, someone may have had time to take Connie's keys and- C ~ I didn't leave my- E ~Uh pardon, pardon a misstatement on my part. Someone may have had time to SOMEHOW take A KEY to the register and have a copy made. Unless you plan to have the registers key and lock changed imediately I think we would be wise to watch the register! W~ Well...alright. But I don't want to draw attention to this. I'm sure the money will turn up. Buisness as usual then, ok? C ~ Ok. E ~ Of, couse, Mr. Whittiker. W~Meanwhile, I'll take the money we DO have to the safe. (Whit walks away) E ~ Mr. Whittiker is a very wise man. C ~ He sure is! E ~ BUT, there are time when I wonder if he's a little sheltered from the wiles of the real word. C ~ You mean... E ~ Yes, Ms. Kendal. I think we should watch the register VEEERY closely tommorrow. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ W ~ (on the phone) I thought it was misprinting but everything seems to look alright, um, you have the cleaning solution...? Good, be right around to get it. (hangs up) Connie! Eugene? I have to run to the hardware store. Connie? E ~ Here I am Mr. Whittiker! Behind the counter. W ~ Oh! didn't see you there! Heh heh, couldn't you hear me? E ~ Yes but I was trying to - uh - you're going to the hardware store? W ~ That's right. Won't be long. Eugene, is, everything alright? E ~ Yes, absolutly. Uh, I was just watching the register as we agreed last night. W ~ Uh, huh, but where's Connie? E ~ Oh, I'm sure she's around here somewhere. W ~ Well, see you later. E ~ Goodbye! (whistles) Ms. Kendal! You can come out now! Mr. Whittiker's gone! C ~ Eugene, I'm not sure about this! E ~ It's a simple fool-proof plan! You stand over there behind those houseplants and trees and you'll have a clear view of the register! C ~ But what if somebody sees me, what'll I say? E ~ Well, just tell them you're...you're watering them! C ~ They're plastic Eugene! E ~ Watering them to clean them! C ~ (sigh) Alright, just so no one sees me back there! E ~ You're wearing green clothes! What else do you want to do? Put camoflouge grease paint on your face? Quickly now before the costomers start coming in! C ~ OK! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ B ~ (sigh) Well, good Bernard, Whit asks you to clean his windows and you forget half your equiptment! I'll have to use some paper towls I guess. Paper towls, paper towls, where does Whit keep the paper towls? Ha! Behind the counter where else? E ~ I don't think you'll mind if I got ya! B ~ AYE! E ~ You're apprehended you premetitated coperer! B ~ WHAT ARE YOU DOING? E ~ DON'T MOVE! These handcuffs are designed for maximum effectivness! B ~ UH! Let go of my wrist! E ~ OH! It's you, Mr. Walten! B ~ Well, of course it is! What's this all about? Get me out of these handcuffs! E ~ In time sir! But! First I have to know what you were doing! B ~ I was looking for paper towls! What I get for leaving mine at home. E ~ Paper towls, and how did you know we kept paper towls behind the counter? B ~ I could see them! E ~ Oh, how very convinient! Would you mind if I locked you to the counter untill Mr. Whittiker returns? He might want to ask you some questions before pressing charges! B ~ ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR MIND? PRESS CHARGES FOR WHAT? E ~ For pettie theft sir! $60 to be precise! B ~ Oh, this is rediculous. Are you accusing ME of stealing money? C ~ Eugene! What are you doing?!? B ~ (sigh) I'm glad you're here Connie, will you please - what is that all over your face? Most women do mud packs at night. C ~ Just some grease paint. B ~ Have you been out on menovers or are you here to take hostages? C ~ Well, I was- E ~ Please, Ms. Kendal. C ~ I was watching him Eugene, he wasn't doing anything! B ~ Listen to her! C ~ I could see him clearly from behind the artifitial trees. He wasn't going for the cash register. B ~ The cash register. If I was gonna rob a cash register, do you think I'd come here? This place is getting loonier all the time. E ~ It would helpful sir, if you didn't add to the confusion. B ~ LOOK, detective. I'm Bernard Walten. You know me- b-both of you know me. I wa trying to get some paper towls! T-t-to clean the windows! I mean, you can't really suspect m- E ~ I'm sorry Mr. Walten, these are very difficult times. WE MUST SUSPECT EVERYONE! B ~ I see, I understand. And you're gonna "suspect" what an old squigy tastes like if you don't get these handcuffs off me in the next five seconds! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ W ~ Alright you two, now that you've had your day of fun, we're going to talk about it. E ~ Mr. Whittiker, you must understand that we were only attemting to- W ~ I understand what you were trying to do Eugene. You were trying to catch someone stealing from the register. Frankly I'm ashamed of the both of you. C ~ But Whit! W ~ Most of the people who come into Whit's End are our friends, well, they used to be, but after your shananagains today I'm not so sure! Hiding behind the counter with handcuffs. Really Eugene? You've been reading too many detective stories. E ~ I don't read them at all! W ~ Maybe you should! Then maybe you wouldn't come up with such silly ideas. What are you gonna do next? Set up bear traps? E ~ Well, as a matter of fact- W ~ And you Connie! Crawling around like ramble through the house plants, in, camoflouge grease paint! C ~ Sorry Whit. W ~ I spent most of the afternoon trying to assure at least a dozen people that you, hadn't lost your minds. And, there was another dozen that were so affended that you suspected them of stealing, they might never come back again! Why didn't you listen to me? E ~ I must take full responsibility for this Mr. Whittiker. You seem convinced that the money will turn up, whereas, I believe that there are more devious forces at work. W ~ Who? Our costomers? The people of Odyssey? E ~ Weeell... W ~Eugene, when I reach the point where I can't trust the folks who come in here to enjoy my shop then I'll close it up! Next thing you know you'll be suspecting each other of taking the money, or, even ME! E ~ N-n-never Mr. Whittiker! C ~ GOOD GRIEF WHIT! W ~ Well, let me finish these totals so we can go home. (shuffles throught the money) Well I double checked the print out on the register and it works perfectly, and I'll use this adding sheet to make sure I don't make a mistake. C ~ I told you hiding in the house palnts wasn't a good idea. E ~ Well I didn't think even you would take a casual jocularity about grease paint so seriously! C ~ OH! And the handcuffs were a real success weren't they?! E ~ Well they would've worked perfectly if Bernard hadn't knangled them with his squigy! W ~ Ah, there. The register tape says we should have $153 and 12 cents. E ~ and, how much cash did we recieve? W ~ $113 and 12 cents. C ~ (gasps) OH NO! E ~ But, but that means- W ~ Exactly. We're missing another $40! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ W ~ (sigh) So we're short $40. E ~ Hummm, $60 was missing last night, and $40 tonight. C ~ That's $100 total. E ~ An interesting amount. C ~ But- why would anyone take $100 exactly? W ~ We don't know that anyone took it Connie! Why don't you listen to me? C ~ Eugene, you said you needed another $100 to buy a computer! W ~ NOW WAIT A MINUTE! E ~ Curiously enough Ms. Kendal, you said you needed $100 to oximoronicly purchase a brand new, used car! W ~ NOW JUST HOLD ON! C ~ You're the one who thinks everyone's capable of stealing the money! E ~ You work the cash register far more frequently than do I! W ~ STOP IT! I won't have this kind of talk! Do you realize what you're accusing each other of doing? DO YOU?! (sigh) I still believe the money will turn up. Now, lets go home and just forget about this! No more suspitions! No more hundcuffs or grease paint, or hiding in plants or behind counters! GOT IT? Well you better. B ~ CONNIE? C ~ UH, OH, HI! Hi Mr. Walten! You scared me! I thought you were Eugene. B ~ Well that's a feeling I understand. What's a girl your age doing with all that money? C ~ What money? B ~ The money you tried to hide under the table as I came up. C ~ OH! Oh, thaaat money. It's, well, uh, (sigh) nobody's sopposed to see it. B ~ Well, you picked a funny place to hide it! C ~ I mean Whit and Eugene aren't sopposed to see it. I was waiting untill they weren't around so I could put it back in the cash register. B ~ BACK in the cash register? I thought the problem here was that the money was being taken out of the cash register! (mumbles to himself) C ~ No, this money needs to go back. B ~ Huh? Did you take the money Connie and you're feeling guilty and putting it back? C ~ NOOO, I wouldn't do something like that! I'm putting my own money in there, so, so, so, someone else won't get in trouble. B ~ Ahh, you know who took the money? C ~ Well, I'm pretty sure. I was thinking about it last night, and I decided the Christian thing to do would be to, put my own money in the cash register so he wouldn't get in trouble. B ~ HE?! C ~ Yah, I'm waiting for the right time to do it. Maybe I could send him to the bank to get a roll of quarters or something! B ~ Well, uh, don't you think you should talk to Whit about this first? C ~ NOOO! If he found out I was doing this then he'd KNOW Eugene really took the money and there would be no point in my trying to help him! B ~ EUGENE?! C ~ I didn't say that, no, you didn't hear me say that! B ~ Eh, it's none of MY buisness. I'm just around here to wash windows and get handcuffed that's all. Where is Whit, anyway? I have to talk to him about his back windows. C ~ Oh, he may be in the work room, Iheard someone working down there earlier. B ~ Oh, thank you. Oh, Connie? C ~ Yah? B ~ For what it's worth, I think your heart's in the right place. C ~ REALLY?! B ~ YAH! Yah-yah, your brain is missing in action, but your heart's in the right place. (mumbles) Wonder where these kids get their ideas anyway. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ (drill sounds) B ~ Whit?! Whit?! E ~ WHERE?!?! B ~ I don't know. E ~ (sighs with relief) You startled me Mr. Walten, I thought you might be he. B ~ Why would Whit be calling his own name all the way down the stairs? (mumbles) this place gets loonier all the time. (normal voice) Where is he? E ~ Oh, out, running errands. Now if you'll excuse me, time is of the essance! B ~ What in the world is this contraption? E ~ Oh, well, just between us, I've come up with a plan to capture the one who's been stealing money from the register! B ~ Really? E ~ I'm going to hook this cable here, uh, would you hold it for a minute please? B ~ Sure! E ~ I'm going to hook this cable to a small car battery and this other cable to a bell beneeth the register! Now, if someone trys to open the register without MY knowing it, they'll get zapped and set off the bell! B ~ Well, mighty enventive! E ~ Huh, I used to do this to my parents when they were dieting! It kept them away from the refrigerator. B ~ You must have been a joy to have around as a child. E ~ Thank you sir. B ~ What about Whit and Connie? E ~ I'll tell Mr. Whittiker as soon as he gets back from his errends. B ~ And Connie? E ~ Well, um, I'll just make sure that I run the register today, I made a switch to turn it on and off. B ~ Well, it's none of my business, but uh, are you telling me you think CONNIE took the money? E ~ These are desperate times Mr. Walten. We are all capable of behaving as we shouldn't. Now I don't blame her, I should like to see her get help. B ~ (mumbles) I think you all need help. E ~ Uh, beg you're pardon? B ~ Uh, nothing. E ~ Now, I have to figure out how to get Connie to leave for a short time while I set this up. B ~ Why don't you send her to the back for some quarters? E ~ That's a brilliant idea Mr. Walten, Thank you! Now, did I leave this switch on or off? Hmm, better test it. (Zapping sound) B ~ (while getting zapped) TURN IT OFF! E ~ I guess that was the on position. B ~ (sighs with relief) I guess it was. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ B ~ (whispered) Whit! Whit! Over Here! W ~ Oh Hi Bernard! I was just- B ~ SHHHHH. Come-come here! W ~ What's going on? (Bernard laughs) What are you doing in this corner? You're getting as bad as Connie and Eugene! B ~ Oh, not that bad, Whit he, no, not yet. I've been waiting to see what's gonna happen. W ~ What are you talking about? B ~ Well, the way it looks from here, for the past hour, Eugene and Connie have been fighting over who will go to the bank to get a roll of quarters. W ~ Well, we don't need quarters! B ~ No no Whit, it was a ploy! Connie finally gave in and went to the bank, while she was gone, Eugene hooked up his trap. W ~ HIS TRAP!? But I told him not to! B ~ Hold on it gets better! Connie got back and she's been trying to get rid of Eugene so she could put $100 back in the cash register! Of course, she doesn't know it's rigged! W ~ WHAT!?!? B ~ I'm telling ya' Whit! I haven't had this much fun since I had ... W ~ I'm sorry Bernard, but I've gotta get to the bottom of this! B ~ Oh, but wait Whit! Just a few more minutes. I've been here all afternoon to see how this thing plays out! Connie's just asked Eugene to go back to the freezer to get some ice cream. Watch. C ~ -more chocolate ice cream! E ~ more chocolate ice cream, but Ms. Kendal, we have more chocolate than we need! C ~ We always run out of chocolate Eugene, just get some, please? E ~ Oh, alright, but, um, don't ring anything up on the register. C ~ Why not? E ~ Oh, I, uh, I think Mr. Whittiker was working on it. C ~ Well it was working fine earlier. E ~ Well it's working differently now! Don't touch it 'till I get back! C ~ JUST GO EUGENE! E ~ DON'T TOUCH THE REGISTER! C ~ (to herself) you don't have to worry about me touching the register Eugene. Ok, lets see, $100, I'll just, slip it in here- W ~ Connie! C ~ (gasps) Oh Whit! Where'd you come from? B ~ Aww Whit you're spoiling the whole thing! W ~ What are you doing Connie? C ~ ME? I'm-I'm you know, I'm just standing here. W ~ With a stack of money in your hand?! E ~ Money? Who has money? C ~ I have an explination for this! W ~ I hope so. E ~ Ms. Kendal! What are you doing with all that money? C ~ It's- It's easy to explain! E ~ Yes, but how did you get that money out of the register without being shocked? C ~ I wasn't taking the money out Eugene I- SHOCKED? WHY WOULD I GET SHOCKED? B ~ You see Whit? The best part was coming up! C ~ Did you set some kind of trap Eugene? E ~ Well only a small one! You wouldn't've been hurt much. W ~ Eugene WHAT DID I TELL YOU?! C ~ You thought I took the money? HOW COULD YOU?!?!?! E ~ Well what's that in your hand? CONFETTI? It's alright, Connie! We understand. We're your friends. We'll get you help. C ~ I DON'T NEED HELP! YOU NEED HELP! I WAS PUTTING THE MONEY IN HERE FOR YOU SO YOU WOULDN'T GET ARRESTED FOR STEALING! E ~ ME!? I didn't steal the money! What an ABSOURD THOUGHT! C ~ NOT WORSE THAN YOU THINKING I DID IT, BECAUSE I DIDN'T! E ~ Well, then WHO DID? B ~ And this is why I love Whit's End so much! W ~ N-N-N-Now WAIT A MINUTE! HOLD EVERYTHING! EVERYONE! We're going to sort this thing out ONE THING AT A TIME! C ~ Look, Whit, It's MY money. Ask Bernard! I was gonna put it in the register, JUST LIKE THIS! (W, E, and B yelling and Connie opens the register) C ~ I thought it would help Eugene. E ~ OH! My trap, it didn't work! Hmm. Must not have had the switch in the right postion. (click) (zap) (Eugene yells in pain) (Bernard laughs) (Eugene sighs with relief) Uh huh! That was the problem! W ~ All-Alright! That's it. I've had enough of this nonsence. I want the two of you to go home. You can have the rest of the day off. E ~ WHAT? C ~ WHY? W ~ Because you're dangerous when you're like this! You've made nothing but a mess since this whole thing started! First you don't trust your costomers, then you turn on each other! C ~ But I was gonna give him my money! W ~ Because you believed he took the money from the register. It amounts to the same thing! This contraption of yours Eugene, I expected better behavior. E ~ Well, it worked for my parents! They lost 20 pounds! W ~ GO HOME! E ~ EACH! W ~ I-I'll take care of things here untill you learn a little more about trust. C ~ But Whit- W ~ GO! Just keep your money and close the register drawer! C ~ (sigh) I'm sorry Whit. (trys to close the drawer) Hey Whit, it won't close! E ~ I hope my trap didn't break it! B ~ Maybe your handcuffs fell in there, detective! W ~ Well let me see. (trys to close it too) That's strange. Stand back. Let me pull the drawer out. (pulls the drawer out) Hmm. There's something stuck in the corner there! Hand me that soda spoon Connie. C ~ Here. W ~ Well I'll be... C ~ Money! E ~ It appears to be a collection of $20 bills! W ~ 20, 40, 60, 80, $100! Why, it must have been catching on something and got pulled out of the slot and behind the drawer! B ~ You mean all this fuss was over a contankerous cash register drawer? W ~ It sure looks that way! B ~ (mumbles) You folks are a bunch of loonies. C ~ Isn't that funny? The money fell out of the drawer! E ~ The most difficult problems often have the simplest explinations. W ~ Well I hope you two are properly embarrassed. You know if you'd shown a little trust all along, you would have saved yourself a lot of waste in energy! Earning each others trust is tough enough! It shouldn't be so easy to break. Now I want you two to appologize. (in union) E ~ I'm sorry Mr. Whittiker. C ~ Sorry Whit. W ~ TO EACH OTHER! E + C ~ Oh. E ~ Um, I uh, I appologize for not trusting you Ms. Kendal. C ~ Yah well, I'm sorry too Eugene. W ~ Much much better. Now, maybe we'll have a little peace around here. I love that one too! I had consitered that one myself, but I had also thought of "Slumber Party" and "Red Herring" because those are so funny! Oh! and I can't forget "The Triangle"! That one is soooooo sweet!
