Forever
Katherine, unlike July of Mr. and Mrs. Bo Jo Jones, is in control of her sexuality. A whole chapter of Forever is devoted to Katherine's trip to Planned Parenthood to get herself on birth control. Katherine says to the doctor, 'I think it's my repsonsibility to make sure I don't get pregnant' (120).
Katherine embraces her sexuality and takes control in her sexual encounters with Michael
Katherine and Michael's relationship ends when Katherine goes to summer camp and meets another boy.
Katherine is not just engaging in sex with Michael because he is her boyfriend and she wants to make him happy. Katherine is having sex because she LIKES sex. Katherine makes sure that sex is pleasing not only for Michael but for herself as well. And just because Katherine has had sex with Michael, she does not necessarily have to end up with him in the end...
Katherine shows empowerment when she does not stay with Michael even though he is her first boyfriend and first sexual partner. Katherine knows that she can be happy like that again. She is realistic and confident in herself.
...love and romance are not necessarily “forever,” and thus not the most important aspect of young women’s lives (Younger 128)
