Forever, a novel by Judy Blume, was one of the first young adult novels of its kind. Blume creates a novel in which the description of the characters' relationship is real and explicit. Michael and Katherine, Blume's young couple, are two kids trying to figure out what it means to be in love and explore their sexuality. Blume takes risks with Forever which, at the time, were something Young Adult Literature had never seen before.

Critic John Gough explains that Forever remains a very popular text in part because teens can “find themselves truthfully presented, undistorted, not in extremis—just ordinary life and its awful emotions” (qtd in Younger 18).
