It is a genetic disorder. However in rare cases, if a person receives a traumatic brain injury they may develop narcolepsy. A narcoleptic sleep episode can be triggered be emotion.

Narcolepsy has not yet be cured, but EDS and Cataplexy (the two most common symptoms) can be treated. Some include: Stimulants (Ritalin and Provigil) Antidepressants (Prozac, Vivactil, Tofranil) Sodium oxybate (Xyrem)
