Gregor Mendel
Father of Genetics Father of Genetics
Born: July 22, 1822 Death: January 6, 1884
Facts - only boy in family -dad was a farmer -born in Austria -1851 he went to University of Vienna -became very sick in 1856 -unrecognized for his discoveries while he was alive
Mendel studied the various traits of pea pod plants and how they get passed down to the next generation of plants. His work was the beginning of the study of genetics.
Gregor Mendel is best known for his work on heredity.
One of the tests he did was with white and purple flowers as shown above. He cross- pollinated them both, and his experiment showed that the purple was more dominant than the white. This started the research of dominant and recessive genes.
recessive = the characteristic that defines a weaker allele (gene)
In 1866 Mendel released his paper about the experiment he did. The people of his generation thought there was nothing he had to offer to the world. It was not until after he died that his work got any attention. Around 1900 three people named Hugo de Vries , Karl Korrens , and Von Tschermark discovered his work and did the same experiment and proved that what Mendel had come up with was correct.
