Originated in Germany in the early 18th Century.

The Chalumeau
Important Facts:
- Johann Denner added keys to the Chalumeau, giving it an upper register - Denner may have given it a separate mouthpiece and reed - In 1806, the thumb rest was developed by Iwan Muller - Popular during the Romantic Period and the Roaring 20's - Heard in many orchestras, symphonies, military bands, and jazz bands
-Made of Ebonite (hard, black rubber) or wood - In India the double clarinet has the reed enclosed in a wooden chamber and the each hand plays a different note, drone or melodic - The Boehm fingering system became popular in the 1850’s and a majority of North American clarinets use this system
The modern clarinet has between 17 and 18 keys and 6 rings
