The Ophicleide is a member of the Brass Wind Family
- Falsely said to be invented by Alexandre Flichot - Made of either wood or brass - The fingering of the ophicleide is similar to remembering valve combinations - It is hard to tune and the unsatisfactory timbre led to being replaced by the bass tuba
- Many Historians agree that Frenchman, Halary invented the Ophicleide in 1821 - Ophicleide means ''keyed serpent'' - Played in British and French orchestras and in military wind bands - It has the deep tone like the tuba, but the agility to move between notes similar to woodwind instruments
