Introducing Stephen Banks
I entered the education field in 1994, after many years in a research and design department of an international oil company. As an educational assistant in a fledgling Senior High Integrated Occupation Program, I found myself becoming more and more involved in all aspects of the classroom, until it became obvious that I needed to return to University and complete my Education Degree.
I must admit that stating I have successfully used technology to differentiate instruction makes me uneasy. A variety of instructional methods are always employed as I introduce concepts, and my lessons utilize a understanding of Gardner's M.I., as well as an awareness of needs of the visual, auditory and kinesthetic learner. However, as I read through the required text, it occurs to me that I have a lot to learn!
It has been 5 1/2 years since Graduation day, and I find myself a Sr. High ELA teacher as well as a Jr./Sr. Vice Principal. Technology, when applicaple, is used as often as possible, as I believe that all students must be introduced to the tools of the 21st century. The ELA 30-1 students this semester will discover Orwell's 1984 in conjuction with four classes from South Carolina, USA, using a ning as a teaching platform.
On page 8 of the text, #5 discusses projects that extend curriculum content. This link is to an explanation of a culminating project that I believe falls under that umbrella of DI. It was planned with the idea that all students would be able to show understanding in meaningful ways. In addition to the song highlighted on the blog, students composed poetry, drew sketches, wrote letters, and penned essays. Please click on this text-box to view the Voicethread.
