Constructivism, what's constructivism? I have gone from never hearing the term, to implementing these concepts into every grade!
Taking Care of the Earth Program - Students composed all of their own music for the all school performance.. This included the themes for each grade, what sounds would be used, and how the sounds would fit together.
Implemented activities to develop community within the classroom
Facilitating Questions: What did you notice? What did you hear? How could we make this more musical? How is this connected to other things we've learned? How does this music reflect nature?
When the New York Philharmonic traveled to North Korea, with the 4-5th grade students I took a Morning Meeting feel for the lesson. We circled up the chairs, and had a discussion of why countries do not get along, what kind of possibilities music can open up, and then learned authentic Korean folk songs. We used Google Earth to see the areas that NYP traveled to, read newspaper clippings, and watched news segments.
Freedom Honor Flight- Students researched assumptions made about the elderly, how to sing meaningfully to an audience, and made connections to other subject areas.
