People travelling to the goldfields usually brought packhorses to carry their stuff for them. Most people walked but some had coaches to take them their. On the way some people sold illegal alcohol in the back of coffee/tea tents on the way. For food, it needed to be either ready made or easy to make such as damper and tea. Food was sold at the goldfields but was very expensive. Work at the goldfields was hard and backbreaking. Many tools were needed such as picks, gold pans, shovels and cradles which were very popular.
A grain of gold
Australian Gold Rush
On the goldfields, it was very hard to stay healthy. Poor diggers usually slept on the ground and richer diggers brought tents or slung canvas over tree branches. Doctors were rare and expensive and many people lied to say that they had a cure for almost every kind of illness.. Clothes were usually made from linen, cotton, wool, or twil cloth. Wide brimmed hats were also needed for protection from the sun. Before workers even set off, they needed a licence to search for gold. The licences were usually 30 shillings, about one third of the average workers weekly wage. Troopers rode around checking that everyone had their licences. People on the Goldfields usually only had one bucket of water for washing everything.
