THE BACK TO AFRICA MOVEMENT
Marcus Gravey started the back to Africa movement in 1916. He established the UNIA (Universal Negro Improvement Association). The thought that he had was that the African American community needed to be proud of its heritage and become a stronger race. He wanted the Africans all over the world to have their own country back in Africa. He wanted people to be seperated and be pure races. This eventually became the undoing of the movement. Because he sided with the KKK due to the fact that they wanted to seperate the races. The UNIA had its own fleet of ships but only a few trips were made to Liberia (the counrty in Africa that they were planning to move into). But the fleet went out of buisness due to bad book keeping and terrible buisness practices.
