Roles of Minor Parties: -Third parties can draw attention to issues that the major parties have ignored and can force the issues out into the open. -Third parties can be used as "protest votes," meaning people vote for them to protest about something they didn't like about the election or about the two major candidates who were running. - They can increase voter turnout by giving people a wider selection of candidates to choose from.
Obsticles Facing Minor Parties: -First Amdendment regulates campaign finance which restricts the amount of money that can be given to support a political party for a campaign. Parties that don't have a massive support base like the Democrats or Republicans (minor parties) are severly limited as to how they can raise money for their campaigns. -Third party candidates elected to a Congressional office have to pick a party (Democrat or Republican) in order to serve on a committee
History of the Libertarian Party: -The Libertarian Party was formed on Decemer 11, 1971 by David Nolan. The development of this party was spurred because of price controls and the end of the gold-standard which the libertarians viewed as having moved away from the libertarian ideals of the Founding Fathers. In 1972, the Libertarians held their first national convention and in that same year Tonie Nathan, the Libertarian Party candidate for Vice-President, was the first woman to receive an electoral vote in the Electoral College.
Platform of the Libertarian Party: -Libertarians believe in "a world in which all individuals are sovereign over their own lives and no one is forced to sacrifice his or her values for the benefit of others." On important issues in today's world Libertarian's believe... -Abortion: government should be kept out of the matter, that decisioun should be left to each individual for their own consideration -Energy and Resources: oppose all government control of energy pricing, allocation, and production -Healthcare: restore healthcare to a free-market system, each individual should have the freedom to decide which level of health insurance they want, the provider the want, the medicines and treatments used, and all other aspects of medical care (including end-of-life decisions)
