Puerto Ricao was inhabited with Taino Indians. Later then came Columbus and claimed it for Spain. Puerto Rico was used as a military base, and then later Spain brought Africans to work as slaves in fields and mines. Puerto Rico was colonized by Spain, but when the U.S. and Spain went to War, U.S gained control of the Caribbean, which met that Puerto Rico was now the U.S.’s territory. Now that Puerto Rico was the U.S territory, people who were born there were automatically citizens and a lot of people were confused when they “migrated”.
Steph Rodriguez: My Story
Throughout the years of migration people took their culture with them and also left behind some. There was a point in time where the people in Puerto Rico went into a depression stage because their economy. Many Puerto Ricans came to the U.S looking for a fresh start. Many of the people who came to the U.S from Puerto Rico inhabited in places like Chicago, Newark, New York and Philadelphia.
When my family came to the U.S I wasn’t even born. To start off from as far as I know, my great grandmother was from the Canary Islands, she then moved to Puerto Rico where she married m great grandpa; he had Indian blood. They lived in Puerto Rico, and then my grandma was born. For years they lived there, later my grandma had my mom and some other kids later on. They migrated from Puerto Rico to other states.
Then again back my grandma went back to Puerto Rico. As my mom grew older she had me. We lived in Puerto Rico for about five years after I was born. Since then we’ve been living in the United States. Through out the moving process, we didn’t face any problems. I think that we still have with us some of the Rican culture. The food, the holidays the language the blood.
