Looking Backward Here's a picture of our Timeline of Learning. On it are pictures, captioned by the children. The timeline also shows each unit name and the novel read aloud. Every year the components that show themselves organically on the timeline correspond directly with the personality of the class. This is the first year the novels have made sense on our timeline. For this group, read aloud is the centerpiece of the day.
Looking Backward We only have one shared writing up this year. (You can see part of it on the left.) Mostly it's an issue of time: our schedule doesn't lend itself to much shared writing time. :-( Still, I'd like to get a couple more up there by the end of the year. My students will be activating their blogs soon, so maybe those will make it on to the wall.
What digital format could a timeline take? Glogs?
Looking Forward When it comes to creating an atmosphere of anticipation and energy, I find that looking forward is just as important as looking back. During the year, we use our classroom calendar for the authentic purpose of scheduling Unit Goals and motivating ourselves to work harder. At the end of the year, we usually look forward much farther- into the summer and into the next school year.
