What's important is RIGHT THERE in the text.
What's important is IN THE READER.
Author
Reader
When we determine importance in fiction and nonfiction, part of what's important is determined by the author. Children must be taught how to recognize what the author believes is important in order to successfully read text books and assigned readings. The other part of what's important is determined by the reader. In order to engage in research and live a life of fervent learning, children need to be able to determine what is important to them.
