'SEAL OF APPROVAL' - party grants seals of approval to its candidates to ensure the good performance of its candidates and officeholders - when choosing candidates the party tries to see that they are qualified and of good character - prompts succesful candidates to perform well in office
WATCHDOG FUNCTION - parties act as watchdogs over the conduct of the public's business (usually the function of the party out of power) - party out of power attempts to convince voters that they should get rid of the group in power - party out of power plays the role of 'loyal opposition'
