The most important role historically is Commander-in-Chief. Although it lost its true purpose because no presidents actually lead troops into battle, the role has proved to be vital. Most terrible presidents are marked by their poor military decisions, for instance the dominant example of Nixon comes up. In essence the President is the final word on where our troops are in this world and often war makes the greatest historic impact. For instance presidents like Woodrow Wilson and FDR are known as great presidents partly due to their leadership in both World Wars. Wars have the greatest impact on economy and daily life and it is therefore the most important role the president has, due to its impact on the rest of the world.
The U.S has a horrible status in the global world as an obnoxious and egotistical nation. Because of this, Chief Diplomat is now the most important role of Obama. Obama must improve the image of the United States to the foreign world. He has started immediately with the Nobel Peace Prize and by visiting many nations such as Japan as seen above in the picture. Along with this there are many conflicts between nations currently and it is our duty to solve these through peaceful diplomacy not aggressive war. Constantly Commander-in-Chief is put above Chief Diplomat, but for once the U.S needs to take a peaceful initiative in solving the world's issues. All of this leaves Chief Diplomat as the key role of the President in today's society.
World War II was just one example of the significance of Commander-in-Chief
