Psychosurgery - removal or destruction of brain tissue - Lobotomy= severing nerves tat connect frontal lobes to limbic systems; no longer used
Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) - Treatment for severe depression that is unresponsive to other treatments. - Patient receives anesthesia and muscle relaxant - accompanied by short-term memory loss
repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) - passing a magnetic field over the scalp to treat depression. - new, so not well studied, but limited research indicates it may be more effective than antidepressant drugs!
