The sequence of food transfer from tropic level is called a food chain. Starting at the bottom are producers in a water ecosystem the phytoplankton are the producers. All organisms above the producers are consumers the heterotrops directly or indirectly depend o the the output of producers. Herbivores eat plants are the primary consumers. Primary consumers of land include insects snails and certain vertebrates such as grazing mammals. In aquatic ecosystem primary consumers include zoo-plankton. Above the primary consumers are carnivores which eat from the level below. Secondary consumers on land are small mammals such as rodents. Higher tropic levels include tertiary consumers such as snakes that eat mice. Quateraney consumers such as hawks and killer whales.
