2. The Island of the Cicones
1. Troy
Odysseus’s journey began, before the Odyssey, in The City of Troy. Odysseus left his home, and ventured to Troy, to participate in the Trojan War. The word Trojan refers to the people who inhabit Troy, and there culture. In present day, Troy is located southwest of the Dardanelles under Mount Ida anakkale Province in northwest Turkey.
After the trip to Troy Odysseus and his men sail to The Island of the Cicones or Ismarus. There waiting were the Cicones they came over the hill but are to weak to defeat Odyessus and his men. They kill of of the Cicone horseback soldiers, kill all of their live stock and enslave all the women. Today the Island of the Cicones is located somewhere in Bulgaria.
3. The Land of The Lotus-Eaters
After traveling to The Land of the Circones, Odysseus and his crew went to The Land of the Lotus-Eaters. There, they discovered a group of people who were literally eaters of The Lotus. The Lotus, is a plant, that is native to the Land of the Lotus-Eaters, and makes you forget of your home land. The people here, tried to get Odysseus and his men to eat this plant. The Land of the Lotus-Eaters is located on the lower tip of Greece.
4. Island of The Cyclops
Next, Odysseus and his men traveled to the Island of the Cyclops. Here Odysseus encounters the Cyclops Polyphemus, who is the sun of Posieden. Polyphemus trapps Odyddeus and his men after breaking the Rules of Hospitality, and forces Odysseus to use his wits to out smart him (Polyphemus,) and escape. The island of the Cyclops is located in Mt. Eryx in northwestern corner of Sicily.
5. Aeolia
Aeolia, is the Island of The Keeper of the Winds; Aeolus. Odysseus didn’t say long on this island, but while he did, he was treated and respected as a guest. Aeolus gave Odysseus a bag of wind, which helped him and his adventure home. This island, is located just north of The Land of the Cyclops.
6. Island of the Laestrygonians
Next is the Island of the Laestrygonians. The natives there in Laestrygonia are cannibles. They leave odysseus ships and the people in them destroyed all but one. Today its located on the southeastern tip of Corsica.
7.Aeaea
Aeaea or Circe's Island is where Circe captures Odysseus and puts him under a spell and turns his men into swine. To escape Hermes gives him a magic herb to turn his men back to normal. Today its now a pennisula off of the italian coast.
8. Hades
After, Odysseus and his crew venture to Aeaea (Circe’s Island), Odysseus travels to Hades or, The Land of the Dead. Hades is not an underworld as most people believe, but an island somewhere in the middle of the Atlantic.
9. Island of the Sirens
Next, Odysseus and his two remaining men, go to the Island of the Sirens. Odysseus had been warned of the sirens, and there abilities, and so he was prepared. He had his men tie him to the mast, so he couldn’t be drawn in to the Sirens, and he put wax in all their ears so that they would not be mesmerized by their song. The Island of the Sirens in located North of Sicily.
10.Scylla and Charybdis
Scylla and Charybdis are two sea monsters that killed sailors as passed by. Today this located in Sicily.
11. Thrinacia
Odysseus and his men rested on Thrinacia, after they had gone a short amount of time without eating. Odysseus had been warned not to eat the cattle that roamed on this island, but fell into a deep sleep, and therefore was unable to warn his crew. Unfortunately, when Odysseus awoke, he found his men had already killed all of the cows. The men were punished. The location of Thrinacia is unknown.
12. Ithaca
Ithaca is Odysseus’s home, and at the end of the Odyssey, Odysseus returns there. He out smarts the suitors, and is reunited with his son Telemachus and wife Penelope. Ithaca is located in the Ionian Sea, in Greece.
