History '' During the 15th and 16th Centuries, it was common practice for people to be hunted down if there was a suspicion that they might be a witch. Witches were thought to have made a pact with the Devil, giving them supernatural powers and all kinds of terrible abilities. To be in league with Satan or Lucifer, or Beezlebub was to work against God - the act of heresy. '' ''The church equated the popular pagan deity with the principle of evil, the Devil, and popular rites with witchcraft. A biblical exhortation, "Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live" (Exodus 22:18), was held to justify the witch-hunt that flourished for several centuries.''
1)Dunking: The accused was tied to a chair and thrown into a fast flowing river. If they stayed afloat then that person was considered a witch. If the person died they were obviously not a witch and too bad for them they are dead.
2)Scales of Justice:The accused was weighed against a copy of the holy bible. If the person weighed less than the bible they were free to go, otherwise it was thought Satan’s spirit pulled them down and they were a witch.
3)Pricking Flesh:“This involved finding a mark of Satan upon the accused, usually a mole, wart, scar, skin blemish, birthmark or even third nipple. Once found, an accuser would push a knife or needle into the irregularity. If the wound drew blood, the 'witch' was innocent of the charge. If, however, no blood flowed from the wound, allegiance with the Devil was assumed.”
4)Burning:A person was tied to a pole and burned, if the person survived then it was thought that Satan made a contract to the person so they could survive the flames. Otherwise too bad for the deceased.
There are countless references to witches and witchcraft in the Holy Bible. Although many such references are indirect, it is clear that the Bible condones any sort of witchcraft and considers it to be no less of a sin than idolatry, or the like. "Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live" King James Bible, Exodus 22:18 Deut 18:14 "For those nations, which you shall dispossess, listen to those who practice witchcraft and to diviners, but as for you, the LORD your God has not allowed you to do so."
