The next day, I woke up at around 7 A.M. and got ready to take Iggy out on a walk just as I promised her. I rushed outside into the backyard and called out her name, “Iggy! Iggy! Come here girl!” I got no bark back in reply. My other three dogs swarmed around me whining as if something bad has happened. I knew right away something was seriously wrong; however, I didn’t know it was going to be as bad as it was. I walked around my huge yard looking for my precious Iggy. Right when I had searched most of the yard, I started thinking, perhaps she ran away. Just then, a short, high- pitched whine changed my mind quickly as I sprinted over to the source of the whine, and there she was. Iggy was on the floor whining, crying, and dying. I quickly dropped to the floor beside her and hugged her. “Iggy, are you okay sweetie?” I said worriedly, “I’ll go get Mom.” *** “Desiree Vasquez”, the vet calls out in a manly voice. “That’s me sir”, I say softly to answer him while getting up. I looked at his face trying to see a smile to assure everything was fine with Iggy. Sadly, I didn’t see a smile. The doctor couldn’t even face me. “Please come into my office”, he said. I let go of my mom’s hand and walked slowly into his office, preparing for the worst. “Have a seat please”, he says to me softly. I sit down hesitatingly; I knew he was going to tell me bad news. He finally says, “We found out what was wrong with your dog Miss Vasquez.” I quickly jumped in cutting him off, “Is she going to be okay? I’m sure she is right?” He looked down at the floor and quickly blurted-out, “Your dog has a deadly disease named parvovirus. The virus has spread too far through her body to help her; even if the disease was new to her, there would still be a less likely chance of her surviving. Miss Vasquez are you okay?” he inquires. Thoughts go through my mind rapidly -- Iggy’s dying? She can’t die; she’s too young and she is such a good dog. Good dogs aren’t suppose to die young. She’ll be okay, no she won’t, will she live? NO! SHE CAN’T DIE -- SHE WON’T DIE! Will she? Can she? Then out of all my thoughts one clearly stands out, “Iggy is going to die”.
It was an ordinary summer day around noon, and I was still sound asleep in my bed. My room was filled with quiet darkness, just the way I like it. Then barges in my annoying big sister Marissa; Marissa is my brunette 18 year old sister with attitude. Marissa is a senior in Union High School and truly believes she’s something special because she will be the first one to graduate. You know how most sisters usually say they’re best friends? Well, my sister and I are far from it. I promise you that we will hate each other forever. However, who cares about Marissa, let’s get back to the story. Marissa leaps onto my bed and smacks me in the head. She screams, “WAKE UP RETARD!” Isn’t she sweet? I wake up with my eyes wide open thinking, “What the hell was that?” I looked around until I saw who hit me in the head like a train. “Oh great, your in here. Thanks for waking me up so peacefully”, I say sarcastically. “No problem my annoying little sister; anything for the baby of the family”, she says with a cheeky grin. Thoughts race through my mind whether I should bite her, slap her, kick her, punch her, push her, shank her, or throw her in a lake, etc. I know she’ll practically eat me if I even said that out loud so I keep my mouth shut until she finally exits the room. “Well now that I’m wide awake thanks to some moron, I might as well get up.” I said as I got up and walked slowly toward the backyard. *** “Hello my precious Iggy”, I said with a big smile. She barks back at me as if she understood me. Iggy is my sister’s female Labrador/ Pit Bull puppy. She’s an energetic, loving, and loyal pup, and is always happy to see me. “How are you today my pretty Iggy?” Another bark escapes her mouth. “Oh you want to go walking, huh? Not today okay sweetie -- I’m tired, have fun playing outside though”, I say while petting her goodbye as I walk into the house and lose myself in television. I will always regret not taking her on that walk.
