CORE 202 Media & Metaphor Making Sense of the Zombie Craze
Infectious diseases can kill humans on a global scale. Based on fears of AIDS, swine and avian flu, Ebola, flesh-eating viruses, drug-resistant tuberculosis, and as-yet undiscovered pathogens, many believe it is only a matter of time before Mother Nature ravages humanity once again. Plagues, including “zombie plagues,” represent the ultimate in apocalyptic scenarios so are fodder for popular media. We will dissect the current zombie craze in books and movies, and separate fact from fiction, as we apply logic, examine ethical theories, apply moral reasoning, and analyze the bases of these cultural metaphors. This course is not intended for the squeamish or faint of heart. Popular media examples include those rated “R” for extreme violence and profanity.
