DRUNK DRIVING
Drinking is the cause of 39% of vehicle related deaths. Historically, drinking was tested by having the driver walk in a straight line, or standing on one foot for 30 seconds. now, it can be chemically determined how much alcohol a person has recently consumed. If you have a BAC (blood alcohol content) of .08% or higher, you are automatically guilty of drunk driving. however, even if your blood alcohol content is lower, if you are still impaired, you may be charged with a DUI. Drinking coffee can give you the illusion that you are sober, but really your reaction time is still slower. Eating chips or other salty products may also make you feel more sober by settling the stomach, but they are just keeping their blood sugars from crashing. The minimum punishments for impaired driving and driving over 0.08% are: For the first offense: $1,000 fine, 1-year driving prohibition; For the second offense: 30 days jail, 2-year driving prohibition For the third or subsequent offense: 120 days jail, 3-year driving prohibition
