Mark Fossie was the character betrayed in this book. He was getting tired of the normal day to day life at war, and wanted to bring his girlfriend, Mary Anne. When she arrived, she quickly began to adapt to Vietnam. Before too long, she was going out on ambush and wearing necklaces of human tongues. When Mark aproached her about this, she told him she belonged to Vietnam, not him.
