Stage 2 Departure-Hero is called to adventure: Snatiago hasn't caught a fish in 84 days so he sets out on a dangerous adventure into the dark abyss.
Stage 1 Innocence: Santiago is an ordinary old man that lives in a small fishing village around Cuba. He is unaware of what is to come.

Stage 5 Final Battle: Santiago, after reeling in the marlin for several day finally gets to see the fish he has hooked. He gets the fish close enough to the boat where he can club it over the head and kill it. He conquers the fish and begins to drag it home.
Stage 3 Initiation Facing the Unknown: He sets on an adventure way further into the ocean than any other fishman.. He knows there is a risk but he is desperate, he needs to catch a fish to redeem himself.
Stage 4 Initiation/ Trials and Testing: Santiago hooks the fish and keeps fighting it for several days. He is far out into the ocean with barely any food or water. All he had eaten is flying fish from anothers fishes stomach and a sip of bottled water.
Stage 6 Return of the Hero: Santiago is on his way back home but he encounters two sets of sharks on the way. The fish eventually get eaten and all Santiago has left is the carcus of the marlin. But when he returns, all the other fisherman respect him because they know how hard he worked to get that fish.
