Witchcraft
Most witchcraft took place in New England area because of the high percentage of the Puritan religion.
Anout 80% of those charged were women.
Withches were viewed in two ways: - Settlers assumed witches were isolated members of a "coven", meant to only help themselves, and harm others. - The witches were "heretical members of a Satonic cult", intending to destroy the puritan outposts in America.
Puritanism was very much based on fear of the devil, or God himself., and the punishment you recieved if you went "astray".
Most saw the devil as being alive and had actually seen him in person. Some saw him as a short black man with cloven feet. Others saw him as a well-dressed gentleman.
