Anne of Austria
Anne was born in Madrid, Spain. Her full baptismal name was Ana Maria Mauricia, and she was the daughter of Philip the III and Margaret of Austria. Her titles were as follows: Infanta of Spain and Portugal, Archduchess of Austria, Princess of Burgundy and of the Low Countries. (“Sample Text…”).
Anne was a pious woman her whole life. That did not stop her looks, “full, voluptuous figure, her thick bright chestnut hair, her luminous pale skin and her dark eyes with the green glints which gave them a special sparkle…her much-admired white hands…made ‘to hold a sceptre’”from being a regular charismatic pull over the men at court. But that is not to say that she was worse than her king. He sought the attention of both women and men, a hushed and shameful idea of the time, but, he was a king, so that didn’t matter as long as he reined.(“Anne of Austria 1601-1666”).
It had been compared in the early years before their marriage that she would be the moon to her husband’s sun. “‘Just as the moon borrows its light from the sun…’ the monarch’s death means that ‘the setting sun gives way to the moon and confers on it the power of shedding light in its absence’” (“Sample Text…”). Now, the transfer of power was more reality than poem. Louis XIII had fallen ill, and it was unlikely that he would survive the first thirteen years of his son’s life in minority.
