About the Olympics: Past and Present
The Ancient OlympicsThe Ancient Olympics commenced in 776 BC until the year 393 AD. Ancient Olympians competed in events such as boxing, equestrian (chariot racing and riding), pankration, running, wrestling, and pentathlon (discus, javelin, jump, running and wrestling).
An OlympiadThe Olympics are held every four years and the gap between each olympic games is called an Olympiad.
The Olympic Creed"The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not to win but to take part, just as the most important thing in life is not the triumph but the struggle. The essential thing is not to have conquered but to have fought well."
Olympic Motto"Citius, Altius, Fortius"(Faster, Higher, Braver)
The Olympic TorchThe Olympic torch symbolises harmony and goodwill. It is a sign of peace shared between the people of the world. The flame itself represents the spiritual importance of the Olympics. In keeping with the tradition of the Ancient Olympics, the Olympic torch is kept alight for the entire duration of the games.
