The pure form of mercury is extracted from an ore called cinnabar. Cinnabar is bright red, and is found in volvanic areas, particularly in Italy.
Because mercury has such a high surface tension, it forms balls, even in liquid form. You can't get wet from touching it either, because it just sticks together.
Even though mercury is considered a rare resource, it is one of the first metals used in ancient civilizations. It was very abundant in Italy during the Roman's rule, so they used it for many things.
