Greek Architecture
The Parthenon is one of the most renowned examples of Greek architecture. It was built as a temple dedicated to Athena and was built buy Pericles after the Persian Wars.
Above is the temple of Zeus, another famous example of Greek architecture. It was dedicated to the chief of the gods and was built in Olympia around 470-456 B.C.E
These structures are known for being Greek because of their large columns and the carvings at the top of the temples. Most Greek monuments were made out of limestone and white marble, two abundant stones in Greece.
The Temple of Hephaestus. It was located in Athens along with the Parthenon.
There were five major types of Greek buildings: religious, civic, domestic, funerary, and recreational.
Much of what we know about Greek architecture is from about 550 BCE- 400 BCE.
Roman architecture strongly copied ideas and designs of the Greeks.
In ancient Greece, architects were craftsmen like any other. They didn't recieve any more recognition than a successful tradesman.
There were three styles of early Greek architecture, the Doric, Corinthian and the Ionic. The Doric style was used more in mainland Greece and is probably what you think of when you think Greek architecture. Most surviving Greek buildings were built in the Doric style. Doric was more formal and stringent while the Ionic style was more relaxed and decorative. There is very little difference between the Ionic and the Corinthian style. A very noticable difference were the tops of the columns, called capitals, that were commonly in the shapes of flowers.
