Mary Todd Lincoln

Date of Birth: December 13, 1818 She was born in Lexington Kentucky. Her parents were Robert Smith and Eliza Parker Todd.

Mary Todd and Abraham Lincoln were married on November 4, 1842. Their first son, Robert Todd Lincoln was born on August 1, 1843. Almost exactly nine months later. Together they had four sons including Robert. They were Edward (Eddie) BakerLincoln William (Willie) Wallace Lincoln ,Thomas (Tad) Lincoln.

Fact: Out of the Lincoln children, only Thomas and Robert survived into adulthood. And only Robert outlived Mary

Fact: Mary Todd Lincoln spent a greater amount of money on clothes than any other First Lady. She once bought 300 pairs of lace gloves in four months.

When Mary became First Lady, she was almost intstanly unpopular. She tended to be high- strung and touchy. She often acted irrationally. During the Civil War, rumors spread that Mary was a Confedrate Spy. Mary responded to these rumors by making frequent visits to the wounded soldiers in hospitals. She was loyal to the Union.

After the Civil War ended, Mary and Abraham Lincoln went to the Fords Theater on April 14, 1865. Lincon was shot by an assassian and killed. Mary never recovered from this tramatic event. In 1875, Mary was admitted to an insane asylum. She was released after three months. Mary died on July 16, 1882 in Springfield Illinois. She is buried in the Lincoln tomb along with her husband.
