Did you know that New York was the capital of the USA from 1664 to 1790?
New York got its name from the Duke of York, who gained control of the land in the 17th Century. Originally it was called New Amsterdam by Dutch settlers, but when control of this area was taken over by English, its name was also changed to New York, in honor of the Duke of York.
The statue of livberty. The people of France gave the Statue of Liberty to the United States in 1884. This gift was an expression of friendship and of the ideal of liberty shared by both nations.
New york has five boroughs they are called Manhatten,Booklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Staten Island.
New York has eight million people. Developers are planning to revamp the city by the year 2016, to meet the needs of 9 million people.
New York was built on a island and is now one of the biggest citys in the world.
Many Norwegans have settled in Staten Island. One of them was my Great-Great-Grandmother Thyra Knudsen. She joined her husband Danvig Waaland in the early 1920's. He was a ship builder and probably chose Staten Island because of the nature and available space. Today their Grandson runs a construction company on Staten Island.
