COME
to New Jersey!
New Jersey was discovered by Giovanni da Verrazzano, who sailed for France. The first settlement, however, was set up by the Dutch and Swedes. In 1664, the English recieved control over the area, so it was owned by King Charles II, who gave it to his brother, James, who was the duke of York. James gave it to two of his friends, named Lord John Berkeley and Sir George Cartret. The land was named New Jersey after Cartaret's home island, Jersey, located in the English Channel.
Berkeley sold his portion of land to a group of Quakers in 1674, and the land was divided into West Jersey and East Jersey. The Quakers lived in West Jersey, making it the first Quaker colony of America. Cararet still owned East Jersey, but after he died, it was sold to another group of Quakers, called the 24 Proprieters, in 1682. Eventually, Puritans, Baptists, and Scotch-Irish arrived. Slaves were imported from Africa, and Indians were forced to sell their lands and move west.
So why come to New Jersey???
- We have slaves to minimize YOUR workload! - We accept a wide variety of religions!!! (Quakers, Puritans, Baptists, and Scotch-Irish!) - We have beautiful forests! - There aren't any Indians in the area anymore! - We have mining sites in which we harvest Earth's natural resources, such as Granite, Tap Rock, and Zinc!
