General George Washington won this battle, and drove the British out of Long Island, even though the Americans were out-numbered 2 to 1.
The British withdrew from Boston on 17th March 1776, and everybody expected an attack on the nearby city of New York. However, did not attack until the next summer.
had built "batteries" in Manhattan and Long Island to prevent the British fleet moving into New York. Washington had positioned around 10,000 men in these batteries in Brooklyn Heights, to defend the entry of Manhattan.
On August 26, the majority of the British troops marched over American land to begin their attack. Information revealed to the British that the most northern of three nearby roads was not guarded. Howe took his troops over the road and was enabled to attack the left American division commanded by Sullivan in the back while German troops attacked in front. Sullivan’s troops forced to leave their positions with much loss and retreat behind the main Brooklyn fortifications.
