The City of Kabul By: Trevor E. Hour: 2 05/1/09
Kabul, the largest city in Afghanistan. Located south of the Hindu Kush range the city is elevated at about 5,900 feet. The city of Kabul is Afghanistan’s center of industry and manufactured products. Producing products such as rugs, leather items and hand made handicrafts. There is one university in Kabul and it was founded in 1932, they also have several smaller technical schools. Currently Kabul is working very hard to rebuild what was destroyed. Destroyed by rebuilding roads, school, and hospitals. In January of 2004 the law was passed stating that there will be free elections in Kabul. This was a huge step for the city of Kabul.
Researchers believe that Kabul was founded over more than 3,300 years ago. The name Kabul has also been changed from Kubha and Kabura. But during the 7th century A.D. the city was captured by the Muslims and was later controlled by the Mongols who held on to the city for two hundred and thirty four years. Kabul later became the capital of Afghanistan in 1773 replacing Kandahar. However Kabul was occupied by the British troops during the two Afghan wars in the 19th century.in the late 1970's Kabul was the operational center for the Soviet Union in its military occupation of Afghanistan. This led to warfare till the withdrawal. Now this leads up to the Taliban takeover in 1996. The Taliban created rules that banned women from taking jobs outside their homes, banned girls from attending schools, banned all forms of entertainment, and ordered all men to grow beards. This city has gone through the toughest and most disastrous civil war in its history between 1992-1996. Over 50,000 people lost their lives during the Mujahideen infightings on the streets of Kabul in 1992-1996.The Northern Alliance took over the city as the Taliban withdrew from Kabul and retreated southwards.
There are cold winters and hot summers. The terrain is mostly rugged mountains; plains in north and southwest. Some of there natural resources are Natural gas, petroleum, coal, copper, chromate. Over the years there has been some damaging earthquakes that occurred in the Hindu Kush Mountains; flooding; droughts.
In recent new the Taliban vowed Wednesday to launch a wave of attacks in a spring offensive as a surge of American troops arrives in Kabul, a threat delivered on the same day that 42 militants were reported killed in clashes.
