Now, a week has gone by. Michael is still thinking about Nicole, and her ,so far, seemingly inevitable fate. All together he had raised almost $9,000. Frankly he was dissapointed. She had only three more months, and only six weeks left before it was too late for the operation. This operation, all together, costs $16,250. He was short a lot of money. He was depressed all day after he counted it up. '' It took me an entire month to get that,'' he thought to himself, ''and I don't know how much more I can get.'' Things never seemed worse; but, somehow he kept hope in. That little girl that makes his eyes light up is dying. He had to do all he could. Hopefully his prayers would be answered. Not many people know this, not even Nicole, but before Nicole was dying, Michael was an atheist. Never even wanted to think about some god. But when he had heard the news, he got home that very first night and prayed. He had apologized for denying Him and asked to have some way to help Nicole. He did this for three days in a row for two hours a night when his first prayer was answered, and he's done it ever since. Nicole was busy worrying about a prom dress. Her mother was so excited to see how happy her daughter was. Not every girl who has a cancer can even go to prom. But Nicole could, and she was happy about it. Never had someone been so happy to see their daughter, bald, and in a beautiful baby blue dress. Oh how she loved to twirl around and make the dress fan out. Her mom began to tear. She was so sad that her beautiful little baby had to go. It isn't fair getting to watch your child die a little more everyday until she is stone dead. A day passes and Michael had felt desprate. He was so desprate that he called dozens of people to donate, and no one would. He sat in his room all day today and cried. He would not even see Nicole. He could not bear seeing the girl he could not help. Nicole had wondered why Michael woudl not even talk to her. She called, and no one answered. She knocked and Michael's parents said he's sick. Yes, he was sick; heartbroken. The next day a knock came to Michael's door. His mom answered it. ''Is this the residence where Michael Burns Lives?'' asked the man. '' Yes, this is. I am his mother.'' '' May I speak to your son Mrs. Burns?'' ''Michael,'' his mother called, ''there's a man here to see you.'' Michael walked to the door, not knowing what to expect. ''Michael, I am Mac Byrd, your story has traveled two hundred miles across state lines. I am a news reporter with some news that I hope you'll love.'' Michael's eyes dilated when he saw the man pull out his checkbook and start writing. ''Now our station has agreed to pay the rest of the for the operation, and in return, we would like yours and her story.'' Michael didn't know what to say. He just stood there, tears in his eyes. He hugged the reporter. ''Promise me one thing,'' Michael said. ''Yes,'' Mac said. '' Nicole can't know. Its a surprise for her.'' '' Oh, I understand. I promise.''
