where's it from? and how'd it get here? Brazilian waterweed originally grew in South America and got here through aquarium trade.
BRAZILIAN WATERWEED
whats the problem with this stuff? Brazilian water weed, or Egeria Densa, can grow rapidly and crowd out native underwater plants and animals. If there is too much of it, it can even disrupt water flow and capture and trap the sediments and cause water quality to fluctuate.
Is there anything positive to this waterweed? Egeria Densa used to be sold in Washington pet stores under the name of anacharis. It was said that it was a good oxygenator plant. Sold from 1915 to 1996. It can also be used in plant physiology because of its leaf structure.
So where does it live? Brazilian waterweed can survive up to 20 ft. deep in freshwater streams, ponds, lakes, etc.
What can be done to control and stop the spread of this plant? Many things have been tried to contain this weed, but some failed. If mechanical structures try and take it out, bits and pieces of the weed will get left behind, and the plant will reproduce again. The only other successful treatment is chemical control. It contains and manages it very well and does not leave any fragments behind.
Reproduction? Waterweed reproduces vegetively using the nodes on its leaves.
