Taiwan 2. Geographic Location: Taiwan is located 120 kilometers off the coast of the Chinese mainland. It is surrounded by the East China Sea, the Philippines Sea, and the Luzon Straight. 3. Ethnic Groups Included in This Region: Believed to be of Chinese decent. Was once under Japanese rule. 4. Type of Economic Activities: Taiwan’s main source of income is the import and export of goods. Some examples of their trade are petroleum refining, chemicals, electrical equipment, consumer products, food processing, machinery, vehicles, and cement and textiles. 5. How Did These People Survive? They survived partially due to their location and partially due to their influence. Control of the country switched back and forth from China and Japan, with the main dominator being China. Also, in one point in history, Taiwanese pirates captured American, Japanese, and French ships passing the island. The countries complained to Peking, but the emperor said that “Taiwan is beyond our territory”, pointing out how powerful Taiwan was and how helpful its location was. 6. Why do you believe the UNPO you have selected has not been given independence or been recognized as a nation and what geographic factors are not involved? Taiwan changed in 1994 from its government to represent China. In 2002 Taiwan has been more successful in international representation. In 2007 Taiwan maintains diplomatic relations with many different other states.
