The first version of Beauty and the Beast appeared in 1740 by Madame Gabrielle de Villeneuve. She did not write this for children but for her court and salon friends who enjoyed exchanging stories for entertainment. The next version of the story appeared in 1756 by Madame Le Prince de Beaumont. Madam
Beaumont had a younger audience in mind compared to Villeneuve. Another popular version would be by Andrew Lang in 1889. He combined both de Villeneuve and de Beaumont using a lot of the same things as each of them but leaving out a lot at the same time. But it is thanks to both de Villeneuve and de Beaumont
that the story of Beauty and the Beast ithat we know and love is the way it is today.

Not much is known about the origin of this tale like the others, but the most popular versioin is that of the Grimm brothers. Disney even based their movie off of this version.
off of. After Perrault the Grimm brothers came up with their own version called ''Briar Rose''. Their version also seems to be the least grim story. Their version does not include rape, cannibalism or anything else that earlier versions did.
The earliest influence of this story came from Perceforest, a Romance that really has nothing to do with Sleeping Beauty, in 1528. The next earliest version would come from Giambattista Basile's ''Sun, moon, and Talia'' in 1636. Giambattista's is what is thought to be the version that Perrault based his own story
