Women's Fashion of the 1920's
In the 1920's Coco Chanel Orginated the boyish style and introduced the bloused ''little black dress'' and her classic suit. She like to use fabrics like jerseys and tweeds which emphasizes the designers taste of simplicity.
During this time period some of the world's most influential designers came to be. An example would be Coco Chanel.
Women increasingly began to engage in sports such as golf, tennis, boating, and swimming. designers began to create fashionable outfits for these sports. Women's swimsuits during this time began with thigh covering tight knit shorts. This changed during the decade to more of a risque outfit later on. For tennis and golf women would wear pleated, knee-length skirts with sleeveless cardigans for tennis and ones with sleeves for golf. White was the only acceptable color for tennis clothes at the time.
Women's evening wear were elaborate amd sewn. The clothing was usually floor length, though low cut cocktail dresses were intoduced in 1926 in speakeasies in the U.S.
Backless evening dresses remained popular in the 20's. They would be accentuated with long strings of beads cast over the shoulder and down the back. They would wear jeweled combs or even ostrichplume headdresses in there short wavy hair.
Women began to cut their hair short in a bobbed hairstyle. The make up they wore was redrawn plucked eyebrows, heavy powder, dramatic rouge, scarlet lipstick, and dark kohl eyeliner.
Women's underwear became lighter in fabric and design. Corsets and long underwear were replaced with rubber girdles and silk or rayon bras. During this time bras were designed to flatten and not support the women's breast. They also began to wear rayon stockings in flesh colored supported by a garteer belt or rolled over garters above the knee.
This time is when women began to rebel against traditional vaules. They did things like wearing short skirts, bobbed hair, and doing things like smoking, drinking, and dancing.
