Penelope
Epithet- ''...Odysseus, the master of craft...'' Epic Simile- ''Your fame, believe me, has reached the vaulting skies. Fame like a king’s who dreads the gods, and who governs a kingdom vast, proud and strong, who upholds justice, true...'' Epic Hero- Odysseus is an epic hero because he is able to hide his identity for Penelope.
Conflict- ''...every day I wove on the great loom, but every night, by torchlight, I unwove it; and so for 3 years I decieved the Achaeans. But when seasons brought a fourth year on, as long months waned, and the long days were spent, through imprudent folly in the slinking maids they caught me...''
Plot- ''Later that night, Penelope meets secretly with the old beggar. She asks him if he has heard any news of her husband... he tells her he has heard that Odysseus is about to set sail for Ithaca.''
Characterization- ''My lady, never a man in the wide world should have a fault to find with you.'' The author directly says that Penelope is flawless.
Symbolism- ''Ruses served my turn to draw the time out - first a close-gained web I had the happy thought to set up weaving on my big loom in the hall.'' The Loom is a symbol for the gaint ruse spun by Penelope.
