Epithet - Zeus, lord of cloud... Odysseus represents an epic hero because he wisely sends scouts to search the island. Epic Simile - “…the Lotus-eaters, who had no thought of killing my companions, but gave them lotus plants to eat, whose fruit, sweet as honey, made any man who sampled it lose his desire to ever journey home…”
"The Lotus Eaters"
Conflict - 3 of Odysseus' men ate the lotus and lost their interest in going home. ''A single taste of this native fruit made my soldiers forget everything they had ever know; where they were from, where they were going, everything.'' Characterization - The author indirectly shows that Odysseus is wise because he sent 3 men to scout the island. ''In order to learn a bit more about this alien place, I sent three of my bravest soldiers on a scouting mission. '' Symbolism - The Lotus symbolizes temptation because the men are curious enough to try it and lose their want of going home. ''...these natives introduced my men to one of their favorite appetizers: the lotus.'' Plot - They land on the island. Odysseus sends out 3 scouts who later come back high on lotus. They lose their interest in home, so Odysseus drags them back onto the ship and they leave. ''On our expedition, my men found themselves among natives of our temporary habitat.''
