This tree shows the progression of different languages in China, starting in the Zhou dynasty and ending in the present. Mandarin is the most spoken language, and the other dilects are only spoken by that paticular group of people.
When the Han rose to power, many other ethnic groups quickly assimilated with them, language being a big part that was affected.
