Total War
By: Anthony Ramos
A war concerning every aspect of a country!
Rules of War
The rules of war changed with the new technologies that the war brought. Wars expanded from the ground into the sky and the sea. The addition of Airplanes made sky free reign for dogfights and bombing. The sea allowed German U-Boats to sink enemy ships and short out supply routes.
There was much confrontation on the fact of parts of the sea being owned by the country nearest to it. It was hard to say if the water was a free-for-all or was already owned. Today, the sea is sectioned into parts and is owned by the nearest country.
Military tactics drastically changed with the new technology. Soldiers could not stand in a line anymore or they would be mowed down with a machine gun. Trenches were built in order to cover themselves from enemy fire and bombs. No-mans land was in the middle of both enemy trenches and thats where they fought. No land was gained in trench warfare.
Military
Soldiers would be gassed and would suffer a slow death. The ywould have to wear a protective mask called a gas mask. It filtered the oxygen in and kept the toxic gas out of their lungs. Sometimes the wind would change and the gas would be blown onto your own territory.
There wre also tanks that could run over anything in its way. They would be bullet proof but they could get gassed. Barbed wire also proved problematic because it could entangle you and cut you. If you get trapped in barbed wire you are an easy target for the enemy.
The war made the economy of many countries really bad. Great Britain's supply route was cut off because of German U-Boats which meant nothing could go in or out of Britain. Britain's economy plummeted from the lack of trade. The U.S. economy also suffered from the U-Boats because the U.S. was the country that was trading with Britain.
ECONOMIC
Total War also involves politicsc within each country. Woodrow Wilson is the president during the time of this war. In the U.S. they are fighting the war but while they are fighting there are protestors for womens rights. During a time of crisis it is considered unpatriotic to picket against the president or politics.
Political
THE IMPACT
Therefore, the U.S. passes the Espionage and Sedition Act prohibiting spying and rresistance to the war effort. Which means: If you do not support the war effort you are breaking the law. During this war Russia fights with Great Britain and France as its allies but at the same time they are fighting their own civil war.
Eventually Russia must stop fighting in the war and take care of their own business within their own country. Russia's allies morale drops but all is not totally lost because the U.S. joins soon after.
Many died and many grieved in this war. Through the politics, rules of war, economy, and military action of the first Total War, all wars after this will change. There are much more advanced technology, women are allowed to fight in wars, there aren't any more trenches, and there are missions that sabbotage enemy plans. Many rules have been taken out but there are still peace treaties which can stop war before it even begins. All of these factors have changed war dramatically. War will never be the same.
